Start your exploration of Pilliga Forest at the award-winning and wheelchair accessible Pilliga Forest Discovery Centre. Located in Baradine, known as the gateway to Pilliga Forest, the Discovery Centre is an ideal place to drop in.

Pilliga Forest is a large and diverse outback landscape. To make the most of your visit, it’s a great idea to drop by the Centre to pick up maps, seek advice from friendly staff, and find out about guided tours, as well as which are the best birdwatching routes.

Interactive displays will give you your first taste of this dramatic landscape and inspire you to get out there and explore. This first ‘walk in the forest’ will reveal plants and animals, and Aboriginal cultural heritage – Pilliga like you’ve never seen it before. You’ll often find art exhibitions from local artists and other cultural contributions to the community taking place…

Deriah Aboriginal Area

20/10/2022 By Philippa Hooker

Deriah Aboriginal Area offers a unique insight into the traditions and culture of the Gamilaraay Nation. The area is nestled on the western slopes of Nandewar Ranges between Narrabri and Mount Kaputar National Park, is co-managed by NPWS and the local Aboriginal community. This fascinating region offers breathtaking scenic views, as well as great picnicking, walking and birdwatching opportunities to locals and visitors alike.

It’s a great place to spend a day and relish the spectacular scenic views across the sweeping Liverpool Plains to the south-west and Mount Kaputar to the north-east. There’s opportunity to learn about the natural history of this ancient landscape from an Aboriginal perspective. The rare ooline dry rainforest is a fascinating reminder of a time when megafauna roamed the planet.

You’ll pass through scenic forest to the impressive sandstone hills, with some containing ancient Aboriginal rock engravings. Take some time to read over the interpretive signage for more of an insight into this special place. This is a special place for the Gamilaroi People. Sculptures in the Scrub

20/10/2022 By Philippa Hooker

Deep in vast Pilliga Forest lies exquisite Dandry Gorge and the magnificent Sculptures in the Scrub. This once secret location of the Aboriginal Gamilaroi People is now an extraordinary place for all to share. Visit the award-winning sculptures, a project four years in the making, to see five unique art pieces which reveal the cultural history of Pilliga.

Each sculpture is the result of an artist collaborating with local Aboriginal Elders and young people on a piece that tells a story of local Aboriginal history and culture. Take some time to look at these works – you’ll find some information about the artist’s background and the methods used to create the sculpture, along with its deeper meaning.

Sculptures in the Scrub picnic area and campground is near the walking track, which is a good place to stop if you have time, and you may even see some of the local wildlife. If you’re walking the track in spring, you’ll likely be treated to a colourful and vibrant display of wildflowers.
