The Genius of Vincent van Gogh

No other painter rivals Vincent van Gogh for popularity and recognition. Since his death the combination of his creative brilliance and the tragic circumstances in which that brilliance was expressed has fascinated us all. This lecture will offer an understanding of van Gogh leading up to his crucial 1880 decision about the direction of his life, and we will learn about a journey which led to the culmination of his final weeks at Auvers-sur-Oise, France.
Peter McPhee was appointed to a Personal Chair in History at the University of Melbourne in 1993. He was Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost of the University from 2003 to 2009. He has published widely on the history of France during the tumultuous years of the French Revolution and its aftermath.
