ADFAS Narrabri 2023 – Calligraphy Looking back, looking forward

Art talks with Gemma Black. Arrivals for 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start, Cinema 1, Crossing Theatre.
Calligraphy Looking back, looking forward.
Beginning with the earliest use of writing systems, this lecture looks at how we developed the art of communication through creating signs, symbols & images. Gemma will explore the history and development of religious manuscript masterpieces such as the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Book of Kells. We will look at work on death and mortuary rolls, on vellum and papyrus, eventually wending our way to paper and digital writing. Let’s delve into a skill
each and every one of us shares.
Gemma Black is an artist and calligrapher based in Tasmania. For over 25 years Gemma has taught calligraphy and bookbinding for art and craft organisations around Australia.
