SUMMARY:Well Heeled – Shoes Through Time
DESCRIPTION:No matter how many pairs you have\, there’s always room for another pair of shoes. Throughout history shoes have been seen as symbols of power or status in society. High heels were worn by aristocrats and nobility. Thongs started out in Ancient Egypt and made their way to Bondi. Sometimes we suffer for the love of our shoes. They aren’t called ‘killer heels’ for nothing. Join Claudia Chan Shaw for an intriguing look at our fascination with shoes and the stories behind them – from flats and stilettos\, to trainers\, Crocs and the catwalk. Just think of Cinderella or the Wizard of Oz – it’s all about the shoes in the end. \nSydney born creative Claudia Chan Shaw has a multi-faceted career as a fashion designer\, television and radio presenter\, author\, public speaker\, installation artist and curator. She is co-designer and director for the internationally acclaimed Australian fashion label\, Vivian Chan Shaw. The label is renowned for its exquisite handmade knitwear and jewellery. \nTime and Location: The Crossing Theatre Narrabri\, arrivals at 6.30pm for 7pm start

SUMMARY:The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
DESCRIPTION:For the Greeks\, to see the marvelous was to touch the divine. The Greeks loved stories about fabulous works of nature and feats of engineering and compiled many lists of “must see” monuments all over the world. This lecture focuses on the most famous of these catalogues of marvels. It describes the various monuments on this list and why they were so important to travellers many centuries ago. Of the original Seven Wonders only one\, the Great Pyramids of Giza\, the oldest of the ancient wonders\, remains relatively intact. \nProfessor Alastair Blanshard is the inaugural Paul Eliadis Professor of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Queensland. Alastair grew up in Brisbane\, where he was an undergraduate before heading off to Cambridge to undertake his doctoral studies. \nTime and Location: The Crossing Theatre\, Narrabri\, arrivals at 6.30pm for 7pm start

Since his death the combination of his creative brilliance and the tragic circumstances in which that brilliance was expressed has fascinated us all. SUMMARY:Ready\, Set? Adventures in Digital Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:‘Somehow\, and life is strange in the way it springs things upon you unexpectedly\, I have found myself at the forefront of digital explorations in design for performance.  In the last twelve months I have designed Madame Butterfly for Opera Australia\, the first fully fledged digital design for opera in Australia\, UAE48 National Day Celebrations in Abu Dhabi\, parts of World Expo in Dubai\, and the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra’s Christmas season – Noël Noël at the Angel Place Recital Hall. All of these works embrace digital technology\, which in turn I am incorporating into my research as Professor of Practice\, UNSW Art and Design.  Digital Landscapes are a part of our future\, and my interest is how to enfold this technology to enhance performance. Not always as easy as you might think…’ \nFor the past three decades Michael Scott-Mitchell has been a formidable force within the performing arts making a major contribution both within Australia and internationally. He has designed the sets for an impressive number of highly acclaimed productions. \nTime and Location: The Crossing Theatre\, Narrabri\, arrivals at 6.30pm for 7pm start

SUMMARY:Streams of Fire & Tongues of Flame
DESCRIPTION:The ancient and remarkable history of glass as an art form is traced in this lecture\, looking at the works in major public collections including the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. The lecture also refers to glass-related imagery and symbolism in the visual arts\, film and literature – a tradition that ranges in time and type from biblical allusion and Chaucerian dream visions of glass temples through to the novels of Daphne du Maurier\, the films of Orson Wells\, the poetry of Les Murray and recent science fiction. \nGeoffrey Edwards was Director of the Geelong Art Gallery\, one of Australia’s oldest and largest regional galleries. Prior to this appointment\, he held Senior Curatorial positions at the National Gallery of Victoria where he was in charge of the International and Australian collections and Melbourne’s celebrated holdings of ancient\, antique and modern glass. \nLocation: The Crossing Theatre Narrabri\, arrivals at 6.30pm for 7pm start

SUMMARY:ADFAS Narrabri - Khayamiya : A History of the Egyptian Tentmakers
DESCRIPTION:Khayamiya : A History of the Egyptian Tentmakers\nSam Bowker\nThe Crossing Theatre\, arrivals at 6.30pm for a 7pm start  \nWith needles\, scissors and thimbles\, the Tentmakers of Cairo sew spectacular walls of colour. These ‘Khayamiya’ appliques are used to decorate the streets of Egypt\, transforming public spaces into vibrant ceremonial pavilions. They inspired the paper cut-outs of Henri Matisse\, were collected as souvenirs by the ANZACs\, and are now an endangered art form in Egypt. To survive\, it must be seen by audiences who appreciate the value of skilled hands\, living heritage\, and dazzling colour.  A rare opportunity to see Egypt’s most exhilarating form of street art. \nDr Sam Bowker is the Senior Lecturer in Art History and Visual Culture at Charles Sturt University. Beyond developing Australia’s leading ‘Islamic art and design’ subject for university students\, he has curated diverse international exhibitions and published widely on the history of Khayamiya Egyptian tentmaker applique. \n  \nADFAS Narrabri

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: ADFAS Narrabri - The Venice Biennale
DESCRIPTION:The Venice Biennale\nNick Gordon\nThe Crossing Theatre\, arrivals at 6.30pm for a 7pm start \nVenice is one of the world’s great art cities\, with its medieval mosaics\, Renaissance masterpieces and wonderful collections of modern art. It also has a rolling series of biennales – of art\, sculpture\, cinema\, architecture\, dance and theatre – which take up half of each year\, and which have expanded phenomenally since the Biennale was invented in Venice in the 1890s. In this lecture\, Dr Nick Gordon explores how the Biennale has transformed Venice from a provincial town on the edge of Italy into the highly sophisticated playground it is today to showcase modern and contemporary arts. \nDr Nick Gordon holds a University Medal and PhD in history from the University of Sydney. He has led art-focused tours for Academy Travel since 2007\, principally to Europe and Australia. He is also an artist and brings his deep knowledge of materials\, techniques and the insights of his “artist’s eye” to his analyses of art in his lectures. \n  \nADFAS Narrabri
